Once upon a time…in a land not terribly far from where you are now…there lived Wizard. Not just any old Wizard, mind you, but a wonderfully wise Wizard who was a little sad at not being wiser. Being a wise Wizard…of course…all he wanted was to become was wiser. He already new that the more he read…the more he learned…and the more he learned…the wiser he would become. But he had already read all of his books….Twice! And so…the wise Wizard decided to set out on a quest…a heroic quest for more knowledge. His quest was simply enough…simple enough that anyone could embark upon it with him…but also a quest of the greatest difficulty. The quest…dear reader…was to learn EVERYTHING. So…one crisp winter’s morning…the Wizard woke from a particularly refreshing sleep and set off…with a spring in his Wizardly step…around the world to harvest the greatest treasure of all…Knowledge. However…shortly after leaving his castle in the distant misty hills, the Wizard was immediately stopped by a thought. “I am the wisest Wizard in the land…I know of no-one wiser than me”, he muttered. “How can anyone, who is surely less wise than I am tell me anything that I don’t already know?”. This caused the Wizard much distress…such a setback so early on in his quest for more knowledge quite took it out of him. So…taking some time to think…the Wizard sat on a large rock and took out an apple and was just about to take a bite when… “GOOD MORNING” bellowed the local giant…who…despite not being as wise as the wise old Wizard was a friendly kind of soul and the Wizard was quite fond of him. “WHAT’S WRONG? YOU LOOK SAD, WISE WIZARD” boomed the giant. “Well…” replied the Wizard…I woke up this morning all excited about my quest. A quest to learn everything there is to learn…and I am no more than half a mile from my castle and I am lost already”. “LOST?...BUT YOUR CASTLE IS JUST THERE”, the giant said…pointing up at the elegant spindly spires of the Wizard’s castle. “No…not lost like that” the Wizard laughed. “I mean that my quest is lost…I am supposed to be learning everything…but I am the wisest being in the land. So what else can I learn?” “OH DEAR!” sympathised the giant…not really knowing what to say. “It’s a disaster….a complete disaster”…continued the…now completely despondent Wizard. “Look…it’s even making my pointed hat droop”. “WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO, WISE WIZARD?” interjected the giant…but only after a long silence where the giant searched his comparatively simple mind for something to say. “Well…I’m going to sit here…and eat my apple and see what comes to me” resolved the Wizard taking the first bite out of a juicy red apple. “I LOVE APPLES” the giant mentioned hopefully. With that, the Wizard took out the shiniest apple in his bag…waved his wand at it…and made it much bigger…about the size of a small house. “THANK YOU” said the giant…who was always polite…if a little clumsy… The giant sat down next to the Wizard…as carefully as he could…but still managed to make the ground shake as if a terrible earthquake was about to happen and began to eat his house-sized apple as the Wizard nibbled at his. “I KNOW SOME STUFF ABOUT APPLES” said the giant…who had nearly finished his. “Oh really?” answered the Wizard, half-heartedly. “YES! DID YOU KNOW…WISE WIZARD…THAT AN APPLE FLOATS IN WATER BECAUSE A QUARTER OF IT IS MADE OF AIR?” “No…I didn’t”… “AND DID YOU KNOW THAT Apples are high in fibRE. One apple has 5 grams of fibre, supplying about 20% of the daily recommended dietary needs?” “No…” “AND DID YOU KNOW THAT... Apples are best eaten with the peel since most of the fibre and antioxidants are found in the apple"s peel…?” “Erm…no…” “AND DID YOU KNOW THAT…”…continued the giant who was now very excited “…The apple fruit itself is covered with a natural layer of wax to protect its high water content. Hence, fresh apples are always crisp?”… “Erm…no I didn’t”…said the Wizard…rubbing his head underneath his firmly pointy hat! “Well…I never!” exclaimed the Wizard. “How did you know all that about apples when I, as the wisest Wizard in the land, did not?” “I JUST LOVE THEM…AND I LIKE READING ABOUT THEM”, answered the giant as modestly as he could. “Brilliant…brilliant!” shouted the Wizard, jumping up and down in the way that Wizards do when they are particularly excited. “So…all I need to is to speak to people who are passionate about things they love…and they’ll be able to tell me lots of things that I don’t know!”. “How wonderful!” exclaimed the wizard as he performed a dance that he had not done since he was 1415 years old (which, incidentally, is the first four numbers following the decimal point in the mathematical constant pi). The Wizard thanked the giant for this wonderful insight and realised that the he had become wiser by realising that he didn’t already know everything and that he had much more to learn. The giant wandered off, entirely content, and looking forward to the mountain of house sized apples the Wizard had promised him would materialise at his cave later that day (and they did). Re-energised by his first piece of new knowledge, the Wizard spent the rest of his really, really, really long life searching for knowledge and writing it all down for other people to share. Once he had gained all the knowledge that one Wizard could hold, he made sure that it could be found easily and categorised here in this website.
