Dr Who, a television series initially made between 1963 and 1989, was the longest running Fantasy/Science Fiction UK TV show in history. However, when Dr Who returned to UK television screens, it can be claimed than the run now spans from 1963 to 2008. Therefore, without question, it is the longest running sci-fi television show to be screened anywhere.
With its endearingly low budget special effect, Dr Who has, become an integral part of British popular culture, a cult classic and has been cited by many modern day actors as a catalyst to their childhood aspiration. Throughout its long history series has received much positive acclaim from critics and the public culminating in the award of a BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series in 2006.
Produced by the BBC, Dr Who programme depicted the adventures of a mysterious alien time traveller (The Doctor) who travels through time and space in his spaceship, The Tardis, which appeared, at least from the outside, to resemble an old fashioned blue police-box. Almost all of the stories have a strong moral dimension with The Doctor fighting injustice and righting wrongs across the galaxy.
The original format consisted of a number of 25 minute episodes telling a self-contained story over usually four or six episodes. Each episode would contain a short recap of the previous episode and would finish on a cliffhanger. Sadly, no new episodes were produced between1990 and 2004, with exception of a short piece in support of a Children in Need Telethon. Moreover, following a largely unsuccessful US/UK movie was shown in the mid 1990s, it was feared that Doctor Who would not be broadcast again in the UK. However, in 2004, it was announced that Dr Who would return in a series in 2005 that would be produced by BBC Cardiff.
The result was a resounding success and the 13 episodes achieved massive critical acclaim and ratings success for the BBC; a success which has carried the series into 2008 and beyond
“The Doctor” lead character is currently played by David Tennant who is scheduled to star in a 2008 Christmas special and three further specials in 2009. The fifth full-length series is planned for 2010.
